Saving with Coupons for 2011

30 Dec

Like I had said in a previous post, I started couponing in April 2010.  At the beginning of 2011, I decided that I would start tracking my spending and savings on grocery and health/beauty (including diapers).  One of the savings blogs I follow, The Cents’Able Shoppin, had posted a savings spreadsheet she created.  I started using that one, then started making modifications to it because I wanted to see the savings by store, and also to get a full breakdown of manufacturer coupon savings, bonus/store coupon savings, and store sale savings.  I also included rewards I’d earned on the Rebate tracking page.  These rewards included things like the gas rewards earned while shopping at Fry’s and rewards earned on my credit card from using it for purchases.  I also wanted to add in the amount I spent on getting produce through Bountiful Baskets.  I did start pricing out my produce received at the grocery store to get a comparison, but it was too time-consuming.  I did find it was about a 50% cost savings, but for calculations, I decided it would be better to estimate it to be about 40% savings overall for the year. I unfortunately did not track how much I spent on getting coupons, and since I changed the number of newspapers I would get from 4 to 3 to 2, and I don’t know at what point I did that, it’s hard to even get a good estimate.  For what I did keep track of, it breaks down like this:

Manufacturer Coupon Savings: $2,052.80
Bonus Coupon Savings: $258.18
Total Coupon Savings: $2,310.98
Total Store Savings: $4,694.07
Total Savings: $7,005.05
Total Out of Pocket (OOP): $7,412.69
Avg. Monthly OOP: $615
Percent Saved: 48.59%
Rebates & Rewards Total: $766.75

So, the amount I received back on Rebates & Rewards of $766.75, I would say that is probably about the amount I spent on getting coupons, so what I spent on coupons, I got back in Rebates & Rewards, leaving my coupon savings at $2,310.98.  I was a little surprised that amount was so high, considering I wasn’t using as many coupons for the last half of the year.   My monthly spending is still higher than I would like it to be, but is lower than it was for 2010. Additionally, by buying health and beauty items at the grocery stores and drug stores during good sales, I didn’t fall victim to what I refer to as “The Wal-Mart or Target Trap”.  No matter how hard I try to make a list and stick to it at those 2 stores, I almost always end up with more than I want or need, so I am glad to have eliminated that spending.

For 2012, I am hoping to get the spending amount even lower, although it gets tougher with the ever rising food prices.  I am also hoping that my younger daughter will be potty trained soon, so that I can eliminate a majority of the diaper expense each month.  I also have added a new tab on my spreadsheet to better track what I spend on getting coupons from the newspaper.  The spreadsheet I will be using for 2012 can be found here:

2012 Savings Spreadsheet

You should be able to download the original and modify for your own use, if needed.  For the spreadsheet, you will only enter in data in the blue shaded areas, unless you need to make modifications to store names.   If you need help making modifications or would like to see something added, please contact me.

I hope that for 2012 I can continue the savings with coupons and will be able to share some good results next year as well!

Original Chex Party Mix

18 Dec

My mom and I have made this for years, usually for New Year’s Day.  Around this time of year, Chex cereal usually will go on sale and coupons come out around the same time.  Last year, they went on sale for $1.99, and the coupons were $.50 off, which doubled to $1, making them $.99 a box.  Right now, at Fry’s they are $1.99 a box and there were $1 off 2 boxes Chex cereal in a General Mills insert in the 11/13 newspaper, making them $1.49 each.

Now, the recipe that is out on the Chex cereal boxes today is not the same as it used to be, at least not what I remember.  It seemed to change some once they started making the pre-made bagged Chex Mix sold now in stores.  I will eat the pre-made mix, but much prefer the homemade mix.  This recipe here is a mix of the old and new recipes.  This can be done in the microwave, but I really prefer and recommend oven roasting it.  It’s somewhat time-consuming in the oven, but well worth the wait.  I usually end up doubling this recipe because we eat it so fast!

Original Chex Party Mix

What you need:

8 cups of Chex cereal (I use 3 cups Rice, 3 cups Corn, 2 cups Wheat)
1 cup peanuts
1 cup pretzels
4 Tbsp butter or margarine, melted
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder

How to make it:

Preheat oven to 250 F.

Combine cereals, peanuts, and pretzels in a large bowl.  In a separate, small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients.  Pour over the cereal mixture and stir to coat evenly.  Spread evenly on a baking sheet.  Bake in oven for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.  Spread on paper towels to cool.  Store in an airtight container.

Microwave instructions:
Prepare as above, but instead of baking in oven, put in microwave for 5-6 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes.  Spread over paper towels to cool.  Store in an airtight container.

Rewards Programs

17 Dec

There are many Rewards/Customer Loyalty programs out there.  It seems like every store has a card available or has some other way of rewarding customers for shopping in their stores.  I’ve talked some about the Staples Rewards program, today I’m going to talk about a few other rewards programs that I participate in and find to work pretty well.  Rewards programs aren’t for everyone, but I like the free, low maintenance ones to get some extra bonuses or gifts throughout the year.

Disney Movie Rewards
My kids love the Disney movies.  A lot of them we receive as presents, but buy some as well.  A lot of new releases from Disney have had $5 printable coupons available, plus rebate offers tied to other products as well.  Inside the box for each movie is a code for Disney Movie Rewards, the amount varies for each title.  The rewards are fairly decent.  In the past, I have gotten things like a Toy Story 3 ornament, a Tangled charm bracelet, a coupon for a free 3 pack of microwave popcorn, and most recently, a Disney Princess scooter.  I got the scooter as part of their 12 Days of Cheer promotion at a discounted points price of 700 points.  Those scooters retail for about $20-$25 in stores.

Huggies Enjoy the Ride Rewards
I’ve only been able to use Huggies on my girls, most other diapers didn’t fit right or gave them a rash.  I was excited when Huggies started the Enjoy the Ride Rewards program because we have gone through a lot of diapers and wipes.  The codes are printed on the insides of the packages, and vary depending on the package type and size.  There are some cute toys on their now, better than it used to be.  I got my older daughter a cupcake baking set, that had silicone cupcake holders, a chef hat, a timer, and a wisk.  I got my younger daughter a Disney Princess funtainer.  You can also use points to get free jumbo packages of diapers or Pull Ups.

Shop Your Way Rewards
This is a program offered by Sears, but is for Sears, KMart, Land’s End, My Gofer, and The Great Indoors.  You earn 10 points for $1 you spend, plus they run a lot of bonus point promotions.  Every $1,000 points is worth $1, which can be taken off a purchase in store or online.  I don’t shop too often, but I have redeemed $11 in rewards on a purchase at LandsEnd.com, and currently have $8.14 to spend.   Also, by having the card, you now have the option to have the receipt e-mailed to you for your records instead of a paper receipt printing.  I have too many receipts as it is, so this is a nice option for me to be able to have them electronically.

Staples HP Ink and Batteries Deals Continue!

5 Dec

Last week, I had posted about 2 Staples promotions, one for HP ink and one for batteries.  This week’s ad features the same deals, so if you weren’t able to make it last week, you can go in this week, through December 10, and still do the deals.

Here is the link to the post with the details: HP Printer Ink and Batteries at Staples

Fry’s Cart Buster Deal of the Day is Back!

2 Dec

Fry’s Food Stores (and Kroger family stores too) is having a Cart Buster sale event now through December 13.  You can go on the website to get a digital coupon that is the Deal of the Day for each day. After you load the Deal of the Day, if you e-mail at least 4 friends about the Deal of the Day promotion, you get  a $2 digital coupon loaded on your Fry’s VIP card.  You only get the $2 once, but $2 is a nice coupon to get!

HP Printer Ink and Batteries at Staples

28 Nov

Here are a couple good deals at Staples now through December 3, 2011.

First, they have a Double Double savings on all HP ink. When you spend $50 on HP printer ink in a single transaction, you can get double Staples Rewards.  Normally, the rewards on ink are 10% of the purchase, but with this promotion, it will be 20% of the purchase.  For example, my printer uses number 21 and number 22 cartridges.  Staples sells a 4 pack, 2 of each kind, for $60.99.  Normally, I would only get $6.10 in rewards, which doesn’t meet the $10 minimum to trigger the rewards.  Now, with the 20% rewards, I would get $12.20, which does meet the $10 minimum.  That’s the first Double.  The second Double is that when you recycle old cartridges in that same transaction, you get double the amount back on those.  So, instead of $2, you will get $4 in Staples Rewards for each one.  You can get rewards for up to 10 cartridges in a month, so if you haven’t recycled any yet, and took in 10 when you buy the ink, you will get $40 in rewards!  I think I only have 3 right now, so that would get me $12 in rewards.

Second, you can get 100% back in Staples Rewards on 16 packs of AA or AAA batteries, limit 2 packs.  They are $12.99 each.

Now, I know it’s not cash back, but instead like store credit.  They usually will run good sales on office items, plus, I always have a need for things like paper or the occasional flash drive.  Or, if you combine offers like these and get a lot of rewards at once, you can use them to offset the cost of a larger item, like I did when I got my laptop.  You do still spend the same amount of money , but you have gotten more with that money.  In my case, instead of just a  laptop, I had gotten a laptop, 4 printer ink cartridges, and 2 packs of batteries.

Safeway Gift Card Promo

21 Nov

I somehow missed this in the ad for Safeway that came out in Sunday’s paper.  This is a nice gift card promotion too.  When you buy $100 in gift cards between 11/20/2011 and 11/23/2011, you get a coupon printed at checkout for $15 off your next order.  I haven’t gotten gift cards at Safeway before to know what specific ones they have, but I do know it is a pretty big display in the store, so most likely a good variety.  There are some restrictions and exclusions, so it says to check the display in the store to see which cards are participating.

Now, in addition, Safeway is running a 4x fuel points on the purchase of gift cards.  Since my Safeway doesn’t have a fuel station, and the nearest fuel station isn’t worth the amount of savings, I don’t pay attention to that promos to know all the details.  But, if you live in an area with a Safeway with a fuel station, the bonus fuel points make this an even better deal.

4X Fuel Points at Fry’s Food

20 Nov

Starting today, November 20, 2011, though December 11, 2011, you will get 4X the fuel points when you buy gift cards at Fry’s.  Perfect time to get gift cards for your Christmas gifts and get some rewards back for buying them.  Or, go get them to do your holiday shopping.  They have lots to choose from, and when they run a promo like this, I will go to Fry’s, get a gift card for the store I need to shop at, just to get the fuel rewards.  There are some exclusions, the Kroger family of store gift cards and the prepaid generic cards are not eligible.  But, if you are headed to lunch at Chili’s or need to pick up some things at Target, stop and get the gift card.

Why get so many fuel points?  For every 100 points, you get $.10 off per gallon of gas for 1 fill up (up to 35 gallons).  Then, Fry’s is still running the promo to get up to $1 off per gallon (up to 35 gallons) at fuel centers at Fry’s stores.  Buying 1 $25 gift card will get you $.10 off per gallon at a fill up, or buy 10 $25 gift cards to get $1 off per gallon at a fill up, or some number in between!  So nice, since fuel is still fairly expensive.

Staples Rewards on Batteries

19 Oct

Do you do Staples Rewards?  I do, so that I get money back for recycling my ink cartridges, plus I usually get nice deals on buying ink there.  Recently, I had earned $50 in rewards, which I was able to use toward the purchase of my new laptop.  It’s worth looking into as there is no cost to join.

Now through 10/29/11, Staples is giving 100% back in Staples Rewards on certain packs of AA and AAA batteries.  So, you may want to check you local Staples ad to see if your store is participating in this.  Yes, I know they aren’t technically free because you buy them, then have rewards to use in store instead of cash, but this is a case where you get more for your money.  I will most likely use the rewards from my battery purchase to buy printer ink.  So, for the price of printer ink, I get the printer ink plus 2 packages of batteries.  We seem to go through AA batteries so fast in this house, a lot of our toys and gadgets need them.  In fact, we were completely out of AA batteries this week, so this promotion was perfectly timed.

$.99 Capri Sun at Safeway!

13 Oct

Safeway is currently running a Buy 4, Save $4 sale on juices.  Capri Sun is included in the sale, and the regular price is $1.99.  When you buy 4, it takes $1 off each one, making them $.99 each!  This is the lowest price I have seen Capri Sun at for a long time, and the timing couldn’t have been better because we were completely out!

To make the deal even better, there may be a tearpad available in some stores with $1/2 coupon.  I didn’t find it in my store, but they may not have put them out yet or have them somewhere in the store I didn’t check.

Time to stock up on Capri Sun!  This sale is through 10/18/2011.
