Bountiful Baskets – 12/3/2011

3 Dec

This week I got the conventional basket, the Mexican veggie pack, and the tortilla pack.

The conventional basket had butter lettuce, broccoli, radishes, tomatoes, yellow onion, green peppers, kiwi, oranges, pears, blackberries, apples, and a pineapple.

The Mexican veggie pack had cilantro, green onions, Mexican squash, green chiles, tomatillos, limes, jalapenos, avocados, yellow onion, and garlic.

The tortilla pack had 2 dozen small corn, 2 dozen small flour, and 3 dozen large flour tortillas.

I am going to make Broccoli Cheese soup with the broccoli today.  I will most likely make enchiladas, possibly 2 kinds, one with red sauce and one with green sauce.  With the avocados, I will probably make Fish Tacos with Avocado Cream Sauce and Guacamole.  I still actually have some green chiles in the freezer, so I might thaw and use those, then the ones I got today I will roast in the broiler, dice, and freeze.  I may make some Salsa Roja as well.  Can’t wait to cook and eat it all!

This week I got the conventional basket.

Oroblancos, pears, bananas, pineapple, grapes, celery, carrots, spinach, red potatoes, yellow squash, onions, and grape tomatoes.

The red potatoes I will probably use to make mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving.  I like to clean those really well and leave the skins on  for mashed potatoes.  I will probably make Spinach & Lentil Tortellini Soup in the slow cooker.  Since I froze last week’s celery to use for bread and celery dressing on Thanksgiving, I might use this celery and the carrots and make chicken & noodles.

Things are settling down with our move, so hopefully this week I will be able to make more with my basket.  This week I got the conventional basket, 5 loaves of organic 9 grain bread, and 2 wagon wheels of dinner rolls, 36 white and 36 wheat.

We of course had to try the rolls before getting a picture.  They are delicious!  So, we have oro blanco grapefruit, fuyu pomegranates, tangerines, kiwis, blackberries, apples, grapes, bananas, celery, russet potatoes, yellow squash, sweet potatoes, and yellow onions.

I used an onion in a recipe tonight for Bierocks, that I will share shortly.  The celery I am going to dice and blanch, then freeze to have for bread dressing for Thanksgiving.  The russet potatoes will probably be used for mashed potatoes.  The sweet potatoes, well, I still have sweet potatoes from a few weeks back, so I have a lot to work with now!  I think I will be making a sweet potato pie, my husband’s favorite, not sure what else yet.

Note: The type and amount of food may vary from another basket because of geographic location, because of volunteering this week, and because of variances in how the ends of produce cases are distributed after everything has been distributed evenly.

Sorry for the lack of posts over this week.  Life has been a little hectic, so not as much cooking going on.

Anyway, this week I ordered the conventional basket for $15.  Here is what was in this week’s basket.

Bananas, watermelon, pears, apples, kiwi, blackberries, fennel, zucchini, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, and red peppers.  Working on ideas for all of it!

This week I ordered the conventional basket for $15 and a bushel of fuji apples for $24.

The conventional basket had celery, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, black seedless grapes, bananas, apples, strawberries, avocados, pomegranates, and kiwis.  The cabbage I will use to make a stew with potatoes, carrots, ground beef, and peas.  Still working on what to make with the rest.

A bushel is approximately 40 pounds, so it works out to about $.60/lb of apples.  There are 125 apples in the box, thank goodness I’m sharing them with some friends!   With my part, I will be making Apple Crisp and Applesauce.   Yum!

Lots of goodies this week!  I got the conventional basket for $15 and a Halloween cookie kit for $10.

LOTS of sweet potatoes. I will probably make Oven Baked Parmesan Sweet Potato Fries, maybe a sweet potato pie, and I will have to look for something else to make.  I also need to decide what to do with the mushrooms and mushrooms, maybe a Zucchini Pie.  The celery I may chop and freeze to have for Thanksgiving to make bread & celery dressing.

The cookie kit had 20 cookies in 4 different shapes, with 4 colors of frosting.  The girls had a lot of fun decorating these today.

This week I ordered a conventional basket, a Mexican veggie pack, tortilla pack, and 9 grain bread.  I was very pleased with this week’s basket, I have a lot of ideas of what to make.

Here is what was in the conventional basket, the 9 grain bread, and the tortilla pack.

Here is the Mexican veggie pack.

I’m thinking of Broccoli Cheese Cornbread, Roasted Cauliflower, Fish Tacos, and Pear Cake as a start.  I used one bag of carrots already for egg rolls.  I will probably make salsa verde with the tomatillos, to use for enchiladas or quesadillas.  The large tortillas I will use to make some breakfast burritos because eggs were buy one, get one free at Fry’s this week.  The burritos will probably be scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, poblano peppers, possibly potatoes too.  I will probably also be making salsa and guacamole.  And we’ll see what else as the week goes on!

Well, I didn’t get time to go through the produce section to get prices for last week’s basket.  Last week just got away from me.  I will try to get this week’s basket priced out, but we’ll see.

Basket Breakdown 9/24/2011

25 Sep

I was impressed with this week’s basket.  Lots of good things.  I got the conventional basket for $15, the Asian themed veggie add-on for $8.50, and 5 loaves of 9 grain bread for $10, plus the $1.50 handling fee, so $35 total.  Here is what we got, first picture shows the conventional basket and 9 grain bread, second picture shows the Asian themed veggie add-on.

Conventional Basket- 9/24/2011

9 grain bread, pineapple, green grapes, bananas, nectarines, Gala apples, apple pears, black plums, iceberg lettuce, green peppers, red peppers, cucumbers, yellow onions, and Roma tomatoes

Asian Themed veggie pack - 9/24/2011

Daikon, Napa cabbage, bok choy, lemongrass, green onion, Japanese eggplant, garlic, ginger root, basil

I was able to get out to Walmart and Fry’s to get some price comparisons, at least for the things I could find.  I did not price the bread, but I know to get bread comparable to this 9 grain would be $3-$4 a loaf, and I’m only paying $2 a loaf. I was able to get prices for everything in the conventional basket, but the veggie pack was a little bit tougher.  The price for the Japanese eggplant is the price for a regular eggplant, I figured they would be about the same.  The lemongrass price was from a tube of lemongrass I found at Walmart, I found a price per pound based on the price and size of the tube.  Daikon, I did not find at either store.

Again this week, I am impressed with the savings.  I paid $15 for $40 in produce in my conventional basket.  While I wasn’t able to get all the prices for the veggie add-on pack, I’m at $13 before the daikon, so I would estimate that overall it would be $15-$16 total.  Then, with the savings on bread I mentioned, I’m estimating I’m at about 50% savings again, which I am very happy with since produce savings is so difficult.
